Welcome to TrustDALE's Three For Thursday with Consumer Investigator Dale Cardwell.
Hi Trustees! I'm excited to tell you that we've put the finishing touches on a TV special called Holiday Scams, and it will air across the country during December. It's a great thirty minute primer on what to watch out for as we approach the holiday season. We'll let you know where it airs locally as we get closer to the holidays.

Today's lesson on how to be a savvy consumer: I need a repair performed in my home. How can I feel confident that the person who comes to my home isn't a threat to my family or property?See my advice under Legitimize with a real background check
Fast - Do they want your money NOW?
Funds - Is the amount of investment far smaller than the promised pay-off? That's a formula for too good to be true!
Found - A person who intends to rip you off will make certain he can't be found after he gets your money.
Define - Your deal by comparing Products, Offers and Prices.
Ensure - Your deal with an Ethical negotiation, an Equitable contract and an Effective Guarantee.
Authenticate - Your deal by requesting References, checking Reviews, and examining government and watchdog reports.
Legitimize - Your deal by determining if the company has a business license, liability insurance and is Lawsuit and background checked. People sometimes learn the hard way there's a difference between background "checked," and background "declined." If a person is coming in my home, I want to ask in advance for his name and I want to ask if a) the company does a nation-wide criminal background check and b) if they disqualify applicants based on a record of theft or violence. If the company can't tell you or their response sounds "iffy," chances are they don't do thorough background checks. It's your right to find a company that does.
