Welcome to TrustDALE's Three For Thursday with Consumer Investigator Dale Cardwell.
I hope you're ready for this week's Three for Thursday! Todays Lesson on how to be a Savvy Consumer!
The case of Ellen and her fence contractor
Fast - Do they want your money NOW?
Funds - Is the amount of investment far smaller than the promised pay-off? That's a formula for too good to be true!
Found - A person who intends to rip you off will make certain he can't be found after he gets your money
Define - Your deal by comparing Products, Offers and Prices. This is where Ellen erred. It appears she only received one quote. When she learned a neighbor had apparently gotten a better deal, it was too late. She'd signed a contract.
Ensure - Your deal with an Ethical negotiation, an Equitable contract and an Effective Guarantee. I haven't seen Ellen's contract, but it appears her deal had already gotten off track in the negotiation process - It wasn't ethical.
Authenticate - Your deal by requesting References, checking Reviews, and examining government and watchdog reports. Again, Ellen didn't get references, or check reviews.
Legitimize - Your deal by determining if the company has a business license, liability insurance and is Lawsuit and background checked. We checked, and the Secretary of State dissolved the contractor's business in 2017 for failure to update his registration. Ellen wishes in retrospect she would have checked that - in advance of signing her contract.
We're going to do our best to help Ellen out.
