Ask Dale: Can “Own Well” claims they can reduce my property taxes. What’s the catch?

Today’s question is from Lauren. She tells us — I got an advertisement from a company called own well. They claim they can reduce my property taxes by fighting for a lower assessed value on my home. I’m intrigued, but what’s the catch?

The catch is you will be paying for something you can do for free.

Own Well is a company that handles the assessment appeals process for you. The company charges a 25-percent fee of whatever money you save in property taxes, but you don’t need a company like own well to appeal your property assessment.

You can file the appeal directly with your local municipality, at no charge. It’s like income taxes.  You can do it yourself, or you can pay someone to do it for you.

Just remember — there’s no guarantee you’ll get a lower property assessment, whether you file the appeal yourself, or you pay someone else to do it.
